Program Overview

Since 1979, The University of Southern Mississippi has continuously offered the Master’s of Science in Economic Development (MSED) with the express purpose of producing quality economic development professionals. Over 200 graduates of the program include representatives from local, state, and federal government; elected officials; university faculty; a significant proportion of the staff of the Mississippi Development Authority; and the current Chair of the Southern Economic Development Council, the largest regional ED professional organization in the country.

This convenient and affordable online degree program allows policymakers, community leaders and practitioners to obtain a MSED in a hybrid-online format. Qualifications

Professional economic developers come from many different educational backgrounds so all majors will be considered.

  1. Have a 3.0 (4.0 scale) grade point average over the last two years of the student’s undergraduate studies.
  2. Submit GRE scores (all sections). The Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT) may be submitted in place of the GRE.
  3. Students whose native language is not English must achieve a TOEFL score of 560 or more.
  4. Provide three letters of recommendation from persons qualified to assess the applicant’s readiness for graduate study. The letters should be sent to the department.
  5. In exceptional cases, students may be admitted conditionally. Such students must earn a 3.0 on the first nine (9) semester hours of coursework numbered 500 or above or on all coursework taken while completing this nine (9) hour requirement in order to qualify for regular admission.
  6. Students may be required to take some prerequisite courses in geography or business.
  7. Submit statement of purpose and goals, portfolio and resume.

Degree Requirements

Masters Minor

Successful completion of a masters minor of Technology Commercialization requires a minimum of nine (9) hours in the following graduate level courses:

  • ED 730 – Theory of Technology Development 3 hrs.
  • ED 731 – Stages of Technology Development 3 hrs.
  • ED 732 – Fostering Creative Environments 3 hrs.

Doctoral Minor

Successful completion of a doctoral minor of Technology Commercialization requires a minimum of twelve (12) hours in the following graduate level courses

  • ED 730 – Theory of Technology Development 3 hrs.
  • ED 731 – Stages of Technology Development 3 hrs.
  • ED 732 – Fostering Creative Environments 3 hrs.
  • ED 789 – Capstone 3 hrs.

We having a rolling admissions for program. However, if you would like to be considered for a graduate assistantship, we will need your completed application before June.



The program is taught in a hybrid-executive format with most classes consisting of 4-5 online evening sessions, 3 days of in-person instruction (roughly 8am-5pm Thursday to Saturday), and individual assistance as needed.



Most classes are taught in the Trent Lott National Center for Excellence in Economic Development and Entrepreneurship Bldg. on the USM campus in Hattiesburg.



In addition to other USM scholarships, students in the program are eligible for the Joe Johnson Memorial Endowment in Economic Development, Munro Petroleum Scholarship Endowment, and the Rhodes and Ingram Economic Development Scholarship Endowment
