The world of sustainability is experiencing global growth across a wide range of sectors. Beyond recycling and composting, this field influences how we understand ecosystems, develop infrastructure, and even formulate policies.

Recognizing this expansive scope, Southern Miss now offers a fully online Sustainability Sciences B.S. degree, equipping students with the knowledge and skills to contend with today’s most pressing environmental issues.

At the helm of its development is coordinator Dr. David H. Holt. From chairing the planning committee to guiding curriculum design, he has played a pivotal role in shaping the program’s vision and execution.

“Our program doesn’t just focus on science — it weaves together social justice, systems thinking, and communication. Students learn how to connect with diverse audiences, propose realistic solutions, and work across disciplines. This holistic approach prepares them to lead change, not just analyze it.”

Drawing on a strong interdisciplinary foundation, the program combines ecology, conservation, sociology, statistics, and other areas of study.

Debunking Myths About Sustainability

Dr. Holt notes that many people mistakenly believe sustainability is only about recycling or “hugging trees.”

“While conservation is important, sustainability goes much further. It’s about redesigning systems — from energy and food to transportation and cities — so that these systems work collectively for both people and the planet. It’s a science of problem-solving, not just preservation.”

Beyond the Classroom

Dr. Holt is also an associate professor of geography in the School of Biological, Environmental, and Earth Sciences. His commitment to connecting classroom learning with real-world experiences has taken him far beyond campus, though.

“I’ve helped with study abroad programs in Costa Rica, and it’s an incredible place! Since 2014, about 95-99% of the country’s energy grid has been powered by renewables,” he shares. His passion for combining hands-on learning with adventure was evident when he explored cloud forests to help locate endangered species, an experience he often highlights from his time in Costa Rica. That same spirit of curiosity and exploration is carried into Dr. Holt’s current research as well.

“Lately, a lot of my research has involved ground-penetrating radar and locating unmarked graves and buried remains,” he explains. In addition, he serves as associate editor of the Political Handbook of the World, a role that deepens his understanding of the political policies behind global actions. “Life can be adventurous, and interdisciplinary research keeps things interesting!”

Teaching Philosophy and Favorite Courses

Dr. Holt continues to teach through playful and effective methods to encourage critical thinking and creative expression. “Papers are useful, but many of our assignments take the form of videos, photographs from the field, and presentations that allow students to approach ideas in less conventional ways.”

His favorite courses to teach are SUS 197 and SUS 400.

  • SUS 197 is an introductory sustainability course that launches students into their first projects.
  • SUS 400 is an applied capstone where seniors share their stories, present their visions, and propose creative solutions.
Advice for Future Sustainability Leaders

“Stay curious, stay adaptable, and build relationships. Sustainability requires collaboration, persistence, and the ability to see the bigger picture. If you keep learning and stay grounded in your values, you’ll go far!”
