May be repeated for a total of 6 hours. Involves SportManagement study in a specific topic of work or a specific area of research under the direction of a consulting faculty member.
Independent Study and Research 1-9 hrs.
Not to be counted as credit toward a degree. Students actively working on a thesis, consulting with the major professor, or using other resources of the University may enroll in this course.
Sport Management Practicum 3-9 hrs.
The sport management internship is designed for students to gain practical full time work experience in the sports industry. Students will apply theory to practice.
Special Program Requirements
A previous record of academic study in one of the areas of business administration is valuable and highly recommended in sport management.
A comprehensive exam is required for all master’s students and must be passed before proceeding to graduation. A 3.0 GPA is required for graduation.

To be considered for admission in the College of Business’ graduate program, you must submit GRE score. You must take all three parts: verbal, quantitative, and writing. If you have never taken the GRE or would like to retake the GRE, you can visit the GRE website.
If you have previously taken the GRE, you may ask that the scores be sent to The University of Southern Mississippi, or you may choose to retake the GRE and have the new scores sent to USM. Yes, the program is available totally online. Students are not required to visit campus for an in-class lecture; however, an online lecture may be required by your instructor.

A graduate student must meet the general requirements for admission to the university graduate program as outlined in the Graduate Bulletin. The Southern Miss Graduate School applications are fully online. Please submit your application, all required documentation listed below, and required fees via the online application found at the Graduate School for admission consideration.

Admission is competitive and based on a holistic review of the applicant’s credentials by departments. The University sets minimum requirements for regular admission into graduate school, including:
- Minimum GPA of 2.75/4.00 on the last 60 hours of undergraduate coursework
- Good standing at last university attended
- Standardized test scores (GRE, GMAT, MAT, or other acceptable exam)
- Three letters of recommendation
- Statement of purpose or writing sample (according to departmental requirements)
