Choosing the Perfect Major: A Personalized Approach

| 3 minute read

Let’s look at how your personality traits relate to career satisfaction, along with tools and resources to help you choose a major with confidence. One of those tools is the MAPP (Motivational Appraisal of Personal Potential) career assessment — a test that evaluates your interests, motivations, and personal preferences to help you pinpoint potential career paths and the degrees that can take you there.

Interpreting Your MAPP Results

After completing the MAPP assessment, you’ll receive a personalized report that highlights your interests, temperament, aptitudes, and how you interact with people, objects, and information. MAPP also measures your motivational drivers, learning styles, and preferred work environments.

Whether you’re energized by creative expression, analytical thinking, or supporting others, understanding your profile can help you choose a rewarding and sustainable academic path.

Once you’ve reviewed your results, you can explore majors that align with your natural strengths and preferences. For example, if your results favor abstract, innovative, or creative activities, undergraduate degrees like marketing, liberal studies, or interdisciplinary studies could be a good fit. Alternatively, if your strengths lean toward structured problem-solving or data analysis, majors like business administration, computer science, or accounting might fit more closely with your profile.

Pick a Major That Works With You

Business Administration: Leadership, Strategic Thinking, and Communication

Business and entrepreneurial skills are incredibly versatile, opening doors in nearly every industry — from corporate settings to creative startups and nonprofits. Ideal candidates for business degrees tend to be natural leaders with strong problem-solving abilities, exceptional organizational skills, and a knack for decision making. Keen business majors possess an analytical mindset, are comfortable managing multiple tasks, and enjoy collaborating with others. With these skills, you can apply for roles like marketing manager, project coordinator, or operations lead.

Education: Communication, Empathy, and Instructional Design

A career in education is ideal for those who enjoy guiding others. If you have solid communication skills, empathy, and a desire to make a lasting impact, education could be for you. Educators excel at simplifying complex concepts and implementing creative strategies to help students succeed. Education graduates can pursue roles in teaching, educational consulting, and curriculum development. If you already hold a bachelor’s degree (even in a different field), our education programs offer graduate degrees, doctorate degrees, and certifications.

Nursing: Critical Thinking, Empathy, and Health Care Knowledge

Nursing is a dynamic field that combines critical thinking, adaptability, and a comprehensive understanding of the healthcare system. If you have a passion for helping others, excel at making quick decisions under pressure, and thrive in fast-paced environments, you may be well-suited for the nursing field. Nursing degrees open doors to a wide range of specialized career paths, including roles such as a registered nurse, nurse practitioner, healthcare administrator, and more.

Library and Information Science: Research, Organization, and Information Management

Library science is a great fit for individuals who are detail-oriented, intellectually curious, and passionate about access to information. If you enjoy organizing information, conducting research, and helping others navigate resources, our library and information science degrees may be right for you. This field blends technology, education, and public service, preparing graduates for roles in academic libraries, public libraries, school media centers, and archival organizations. Careers in library science often involve managing collections, teaching information literacy, and curating digital resources to support lifelong learning.

Finding Your Fit

Choosing a major is a big decision, but it doesn’t have to be overwhelming. By using tools like the MAPP assessment and reflecting on your unique strengths, interests, and values, you can find a path that aligns with who you are — and where you want to go. Explore your options, and trust that the right choice will support both your personal growth and professional goals.

As Heather Glausier, Manager of Career Counseling at Career Services, shares, “Take your time and talk to a professional. Whether a Career Services staff member, faculty, or professional in the field, it is important to have a realistic understanding of the career field, the skills and educational requirements, and job outlook.”
